Judge Howard Spitz
Judge Howard Spitz age 94 of Boynton Beach, Fl passed away on October 28th. Beloved husband of Evelyn Appel Spitz for 31 years; Loving father of Cliff (Diane) Spitz, Leslie Geneen, Debra (Kara) Kirkley; Beloved Step-father of Gary Appel, Roy (Pam Gardner) Appel, and Nancy (Ran Malool) Appel; Cherished grandfather of Leah Spitz, Daniel (Sara) Silver, Max Spitz, Carly Geneen, Bruce Appel, Natalie Appel, David Appel, and Reagan Appel; Adored great grandfather of Ethan and Noah Silver; Dear brother of Sylvia Pardes and the late Morty Spitz survived by his wife Ellie Spitz.
Judge Spitz began life in The Bronx, NY where he went to school at PS 70 and Taft High School. At the age of 17 he enlisted and began serving his country in the US Army Engineers and saw combat in the Battle of Okinawa (the last battle of WWII) off the coast of Japan in 1944 - 1945. Upon return to the US, he attended and graduated from City College of NY and then received his Juris Doctorate from Brooklyn College of Law in 1951.
He began his career in private practice with two other partners and practiced law for 30 years. During this period he was also very active in Westchester County, NY creating large scale events like Youth Day, a day to honor the youth like we honor mother's and father's, and Operation Narc-out, an educational campaign to reduce drug use and abuse amongst our youth. He also gave much of his time to B'nai B'rith and Veterans organizations.
Judge Spitz then served as Town Attorney for the Town of Eastchester, NY and a few years later, it's Police Commissioner. At the age of 60, he was elected Family Court Judge of Westchester County serving New Rochelle, White Plains, and Yonkers, NY for a ten year term.
Judge Spitz was a well respected jurist who was responsible for opening the Family Courts to the public by decreeing "Justice cannot prevail under a veil of secrecy or behind doors that do not open….darkness must give way to light".
Subsequently after his term expired he worked for another 15 years in a contractual capacity as a Family Court Judge in Westchester County. His interests over the years included jurisprudence and the law, his community, softball, bowling, golf, detective novels, history books, the NY Yankees, and meeting up with his friends and family at Mulino's, Ciao's, and Duffy's and during the holidays in NYC and Atlantic City. He also enjoyed traveling with Evelyn and friends throughout the years around the world. He cherished all his friends as well as his loving family and he is missed by all who knew him. In 2012 he retired to Boynton Beach Florida.
Chapel Service 11 am Monday, November 8, 2021 at Beth Israel Memorial Chapel, 11115 Jog Road, Boynton Beach, Florida 33437. Interment will take place at South Florida National Cemetery, Lake Worth, Florida.
